The essence of cinematic history is encoded, safeguarded, and stored within living bacteria for future generations.

CineBio Archive is an experimental + living biorepository preserving and encoding cinematic works that have shaped the evolution of scientific thought within the genetic makeup of organisms

CineBio Archive is in the making — it aspires to be the a diverse archive of science cinema, celebrating the films that have traversed the ecliptic path of the Science New Wave since its inception in 2008.

  • By 2033, we will open up a physical site (tbd). This space will be be open to visitors and researchers. On display, a myriad of living bacteria encoding the films of all shapes and sizes that have impacted scientific discourse in our society. Consider this initiative as a cross between the Garden of Eden and Carl Sagan’s Voyager Golden Record project.

  • The Science New Wave identity for each film includes their 18-nucleotide DNA code, a thumbnail image, short synopsis and the year of release. This information will be encoded into the DNA of living bacteria. A brief protocol will allow living beings of the future to retrieve this genetic information, browse through a database and reconstruct the film archive.

Inspiration #1 : Voyager Golden Record

The Voyager Golden Records are two identical phonograph records which were included aboard the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977.[The records contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form who may find them. The records are a time capsule.

Inspiration #2 : Svalbard Global Seed Vault

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norwegian: Svalbard globale frøhvelv) is a secure backup facility for the world's crop diversity on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago.[5] The Seed Vault provides long-term storage for duplicates of seeds from around the world, conserved in gene banks. This provides security of the world's food supply against the loss of seeds in genebanks due to mismanagement, accident, equipment failures, funding cuts, war, sabotage, disease, and natural disasters. The Seed Vault is managed under terms spelled out in a tripartite agreement among the Norwegian government, the Crop Trust, and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen)
